Woman claims $1 maintenance

Court Correspondent
A Bulawayo woman yesterday stunned a magistrate when she claimed $1 in maintenance from her   husband. Khethiwe Sibanda told the Maintenance Court that Hloniphani Lusinga had been squandering money with his second wife who happens to be her niece.Sibanda, who was demanding $200 maintenance per month later changed and claimed $1 after Lusinga told magistrate Victor Mpofu that his income for December was $99.

Sibanda told the court that Lusinga was taking advantage of her illiteracy and when Mpofu asked how much she wanted from the $99, she said:

“Now that he is getting away with paying maintenance I will have $1 from his $99 salary.”
She went on: “Your worship I cannot trust that my husband will continue taking care of us and he has reportedly moved in with his second wife who happens to be my niece.

“When he goes to his workplace in Nkayi, he only gives me $5 or $10 and buys lots of groceries for his wife and two children, I cannot accept that.”

In response, Lusinga told Mpofu that Sibanda was well taken care of and that he had tried everything in his power to cater for his family.
“Your worship I love this woman and I know she is happily married to me. We started having problems when she heard my second wife had moved in with me,” he said.

Mpofu ordered Lusinga to pay $50 monthly for the upkeep of their three children.
