A BULAWAYO woman committed suicide by hanging on Tuesday night following an altercation with her brother over a missing $10 note.Sijabulisiwe Sibanda, 20, of Nketa 9 suburb, is alleged to have decided to take her own life following a misunderstanding with her brother Fana Sibanda over the missing money.
It could not be immediately established if the $10 belonged to either of them.
The Chronicle yesterday visited the Sibanda residence and Fana expressed shock at his sister’s decision.
“I had a misunderstanding with my sister over $10 which was missing. However, our father intervened and everything seemed to have been resolved only for my sister to hang herself,” Fana said.
Sijabulisiwe’s father was hostile to The Chronicle.
“Who invited you here? If we wanted you here we could’ve invited you. Who is the source of your information so that we can deal with them? Although this happened, I can’t say much as we’re still waiting for other relatives to come. You can come tomorrow (today) after we’ve met over this as a family,” he said.
The councillor for the area, Mzama Dube, said although he did not have finer details on the matter, he had received information that Sijabulisiwe had hanged herself using a suitcase zip.
“I’m yet to visit the family but I understand that she hanged herself using a suitcase zip after having a misunderstanding with her brother,” he said.
Dube urged residents to find better ways of solving problems instead of resorting to taking their lives.
“If people are having problems in their families they should engage elders to assist them in solving their problems. They can even approach their councillors because taking one’s life does not solve problems,” said Dube.
Last month, a 23-year-old Emakhandeni man hanged himself over undisclosed differences with his wife.
Some schoolchildren in the city have also taken their own lives, leaving relatives with unanswered questions.
