Woman douses hubby with petrol, sets him alight

A 42-YEAR-OLD woman from Maphisa, Matabeleland South province, who is accused of killing her husband after allegedly dousing him with petrol before setting him alight following a dispute over infidelity will know her fate on Friday.

Sindiso Ndlovu appeared before Bulawayo High Court Judge Nokuthula Ndlovu facing a charge of murder. She pleaded not guilty to the charge

State allegations are that on 19 October 2019 at around 9pm, Ndlovu and the deceased Busani Ncube were at their home when a domestic dispute arose in their bedroom concerning Ncube’s alleged infidelity.

According to the State, Ndlovu locked the bedroom door while Ncube was lying on the bed. She then allegedly set the deceased alight using petrol and a matchstick.

The matter was reported to the police and the scene was attended to leading to Ndlovu’s arrest. 

The deceased was taken to Maphisa District Hospital and was later referred to United Bulawayo Hospital due to the gravity of his wounds. 

He died on 8 January 2020 and according to the post mortem report, he succumbed to pneumonia and burns.

During trial, the deceased’s neighbour, Ndabezinhle Sibanda, testified that he was at the Maphisa Business Centre drinking beer with other patrons when he heard news that the deceased was on fire in his room.

They rushed to the scene and found the deceased with burns on his neck and stomach. 

His upper body was slumped towards the floor. Sibanda noticed a 25-litre container of petrol inside the house. They then used a knife to cut away the deceased’s burning clothes. After extinguishing the flames with a blanket, they rushed him to hospital.
