A WOMAN from Bulawayo’s Nkulumane suburb recently dragged her son to the Maintenance Court after he allegedly abandoned his children to live with his  lover.Sifelani Mlilo is demanding $120 a month from her son, Edington which she says is for the upkeep of his two children aged seven and five.

Sifelani said Edington left his children with her under the pretext that the children were visiting her.

“When Edington broke up with his girlfriend two years ago, he told  me that he wanted his children who had visited me to stay with me while he sorted out his personal issues,”   she said.

Sifelani said Edington had never visited her since he left the children and was now staying with another woman in Shangani.

Edington told magistrate Marilyn Mutshina that he could not afford the $120 her mother was demanding as he has a four- month old baby with his new girlfriend.

“I agree with my mother that I have a responsibility to take care of my  children. I am a miner and I earn $243 a month.  The problem is that I took out a  loan last year and as a result I’m only receiving $134 a month. I also have a four- month old baby to take care of,” said Edington.
Mutshina ordered Edington to pay $85  maintenance a month.
