A Victoria Falls man who suspected his wife wanted to poison him has dragged her to court after she stabbed him with a broken bottle during a row over the issue. A court heard Sabelo Nkomo, 30, of Mkhosana suburb refused to eat the food served to him by his wife, Sithabile Mathe, 30, as he suspected that it was poisoned.

An argument over the matter degenerated into a fight.

Mathe, the court heard, left Nkomo bleeding after she cut him on his head and leg with the bottle.

Mathe was convicted on her own plea of guilty to physically abusing Nkomo.

She was fined $80.

Mathe will spend eight weeks in jail if she fails to pay the fine.

In her defence, Mathe claimed Nkomo was the first to beat her up.

“Please forgive me, we were arguing and he is the one who started getting physical and assaulted me,” said Mathe.

Prosecuting, Takunda Ndovorwi told the court that the couple, which had been married for nine years, had a misunderstanding when Nkomo arrived home drunk and accused his wife of trying to poison him.

“The complainant arrived home and was given food but refused to eat. He asked the accused to taste the food. She refused and took away the food which she threw in a dustbin before ordering her husband out of the house. She stabbed him with a bottle when he refused to leave,” he said.

Nkomo reported Mathe to the police and she was arrested.

Nkomo was treated and discharged at Victoria Falls Hospital.
