A HARARE woman, Ms Emma Samedi, has sought and obtained a protection order against her husband, Wellington Muzambe for domestic violence linked to his alcoholism.
Ms Samedi detailed how Muzambe’s drinking escalated from occasional weekend indulgence to daily intoxication, drastically altering his behaviour.
She described chaotic nights when he returned home drunk, shouting and breaking things, creating a hostile environment for their children.
In her testimony, Ms Samedi recounted a particularly disturbing incident when Muzambe arrived home in the early hours with friends.
He broke a kitchen window while attempting to enter, resulting in her son being injured, while her daughter was left terrified.
The psychological toll on the children was significant, with Muzambe often hurling insults and making threats.
“I can’t sleep peacefully. I always panic when I hear a knock at the door,” Ms Samedi explained, highlighting the fear that permeated their home.
Despite multiple attempts to resolve their issues through family and church counselling, Ms Samedi found no change in her husband’s behaviour. She said her decision to pursue the legal route was driven by a desperate need to protect her children and reclaim her life.
“I just want peace. I want my children to grow up safe,” she said.
After hearing the evidence, presiding magistrate Ms Johanna Mukwesha expressed concern for the children’s welfare.
She granted a protection order against Muzambe, barring him from causing further harm, and advised him to seek counselling and rehabilitation.
