Woman gets protection order in domestic abuse case

A woman who accused her husband of physical and verbal abuse was yesterday granted a protection order after a magistrate stressed that disagreements, including those over religion, can never justify violence.

Precious Kuehimali approached the court seeking protection against her husband, Proud Aisa, whom she accused of repeatedly assaulting and insulting her in front of their children and friends.

Responding to the allegations, Aisa admitted assaulting his wife, but attempted to justify his actions, claiming he was angered by her association with friends he described as “njuzus”.

“We are Methodists, and I did not expect my wife to associate with such people,” he told the court.

He further alleged that Precious had taken a blanket meant for their children and left it at one of her friends’ houses.

Kuehimali disputed the claims, telling the court:

“My friends are members of the Johane Masowe church, where certain practices, including the taking of snuff, are permitted.”

However, when the magistrate sought clarification, a woman present in court denied the claim, stating that members of the Johane Masowe church did not partake in such practices.

The court heard that Precious is now living separately from her husband and continues to attend church with her friends.

In her ruling, Magistrate Johanna Mukweshe granted the protection order, barring Aisa from assaulting or insulting Precious.

Addressing Aisa directly, Magistrate Mukweshe said that if he was unhappy with his wife’s choices, he should pursue lawful options such as divorce rather than resorting to violence.
