A 32-year-old Shurugwi woman gave birth prematurely in the open after she was evicted from the house she was renting.
Ms Mercy Mutimbi, who was assisted to give birth by well-wishers and her baby are both admitted to Shurugwi District Hospital.
Shurugwi Ward 2 councillor, Cde Freddy Ncube, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Saturday night in RB suburb. Zimasco evicted some of its tenants who were in arrears recently. Clr Ncube said scores of residents had been living in the open since the evictions.
“On Saturday, Ms Mutimbi, who was seven months pregnant was evicted from the house she was staying and at around 6pm on the same day, she started complaining of pain, but no one thought it could be labour pain since she was insisting she was still seven months pregnant,” said Councillor Ncube.
He said there was commotion when Ms Mutimbi, who could have gone into depression, suddenly went into labour while she was sleeping on her bed in the open.
“When I received a call from some neighbours as the local councillor, I quickly went to the scene and found some women assisting her to deliver as other people, including children, watched,” said Clr Ncube.
“It was really disheartening, but we are thankful that she survived together with the premature baby and they are in admission in Hospital.”
