Woman in court for baby dumping

Fungai Jachi  Court Reporter
A 30-year-old woman yesterday admitted to abandoning her newborn baby at a dumping site in Budiriro 2, Harare, last year.
This revelation was made by Gladys Hungwe when she appeared before Mbare magistrate Ms Anita Tshuma. Hungwe is being charged with concealment of birth as defined by Section 106 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9:23.

During her plea recording, Hungwe told the court that she had resorted to dumping the baby because she had run out of options.

“I had no other choice, I had given birth to a stillborn and I did not know what to do with the dead baby,” she said.

Ms Tshuma remanded her in custody to today for the continuation of her plea recording.

Circumstances are that in August last year Hungwe gave birth to a baby and hid it at a dumping site in Budiriro 2.

Police received a tip-off that Hungwe had given birth to a baby and dumped it at the dumping site.

A follow-up was made and the baby was found there, dead.

Ms Mirirai Mavema prosecuted.
