Long before Octavia Spencer was an Oscar-winning actress, she was a hopeful teenager who got the chance to work with Whoopi Goldberg. The 44-year-old “The Help” star revealed on Monday’s episode of “The View” that it was this experience in 1990 that pushed her into acting.
“I had verbal diarrhoea when I met you,” Octavia laughingly told “The View” hosts of meeting Whoopi, 59, on the set of “The Long Walk Home”.
She then launched into a short story about performing a scene from Whoopi’s earlier film, “The Colour Purple”.
“You had this cute little smile,” Octavia remembered of Whoopi. “You were like: Oh lord. Um, so . . . ”
Fortunately, Whoopi had the humour and good grace to respond after that by completing the scene with Octavia.
“You engaged and it just made my world,” said Octavia of the experience.
Whoopi also had positive memories to share of Octavia from that time, noting: “I think one of the things that was great about my experience with you was watching you decide that you were going to go for [acting].”
The two women kept in touch afterwards, with Whoopi sending a message of congratulations a few years later when Octavia graduated from college.
Octavia has gone far since that first experience with Whoopi, having won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 2011’s “The Help”. — dailymail.
