A HARARE woman, who allegedly posed as a vehicle importer, is facing five counts of fraud involving more than US$17,000.
Regina Mandiya (28), a director of Ginnah Motors, was remanded in custody after she appeared before magistrate Ruth Moyo yesterday.
She was facing allegations of defrauding clients who paid for the importation of cars, which were never delivered.
The State opposed bail, arguing that Mandiya was linked to other pending fraud cases and was likely to interfere with witnesses.
Prosecutors claim that between January and April this year, Mandiya allegedly misrepresented to several clients that she was able to facilitate the importation of vehicles from Japan, Tanzania and South Africa.
In the first count, Roy Makokoro allegedly paid US$2,748 for the importation of a car, which was never delivered, and nothing was recovered.
On the second count, Maclloyd C. Tapera allegedly paid US$5,124 for the importation of a Toyota Hiace from Japan.
Despite making the payment, the vehicle was never delivered.
John Makesi allegedly lost US$7,530 after paying for the importation of a car from Japan. The State alleges Mandiya became evasive when asked to provide proof that car had been shipped.
Luluwa Annah Dhiki allegedly paid US$1,500 for a Toyota Hiace that was never delivered.
Wilfred Mashaya is listed as the fifth complainant and he allegedly lost US$531 after paying for the deposit for the importation of a vehicle.
The total prejudice amounts to US$17,433 and nothing has been recovered.
