A 24-year-old woman from Esigodini in Matabeleland South province landed herself in court after allegedly sending grossly offensive messages to another woman in her area.
Charity Mpofu (24) appeared before Esigodini magistrate facing three counts for contravening section 88(a) of the Post and Telecommunications Act, Chapter 12:05 “Send by Telephone any message that is grossly offensive.”
Mpofu allegedly sent grossly offensive messages to Soneni Ndlovu (56). Mpofu pleaded guilty to all the charges.
Mpofu in her defence, said she told the complainant to leave her husband alone but the complainant insulted her back by citing that the accused gave birth to “dead children and only fell pregnant for a year” which made her angry because she “is always having miscarriages” as said by the complainant.
The court heard that on 13 August 2024 at around 1215 hours, Mpofu sent grossly offensive messages via telephone to Ndlovu, using words not fit for public consumption. The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of the accused person.
