A MUTASA woman has been convicted and sentenced to 12 months in prison for scalding her abusive husband with hot oil.

Madeline Chimedza (33), from Marira Village, under Chief Mutasa, appeared before Mutare magistrate Mrs Thandiwe Sibanda, facing charges of physical abuse under Section 3(1) (a) and Section 4(1) of the Domestic Violence Act (Chapter 5:16).

Chimedza was lucky to have four months suspended on usual conditions, resulting in an effective eight-month jail term.

Prosecutor Ms Tinotenda Muzondo told the court that on April 19, Chimedza poured boiling cooking oil on her husband’s face while he was asleep, causing severe burns.

Chimedza argued that she had suffered long-term abuse at the hands of her husband, which led to her actions.

“I poured the hot oil on him because he had always been assaulting me, and I never reported it. On the day in question, he assaulted me in the early hours of the morning,” she said.
