A 33-YEAR-OLD woman, who is a vendor near Sai Mart Supermarket at Gokwe business centre, has been jailed for two years after being convicted of testing a 10-year-old girl for HIV without her consent.

Mavis Sibanda, of Gokwe South, was jailed when she appeared before Gokwe Magistrate Mr Honest Musiiwa charged with assault.

Circumstances leading to her arrest are that on May 25 this year at around 10 am, Sibanda was at her workplace in Gokwe’s CBD when the 10-year-old girl passed by.

She called her back and requested to touch her forefinger. The girl complied.

Sibanda then pricked it and took some blood and used an HIV test kit to find out the girl’s status.

Irked by Sibanda’s conduct and fear of the unknown, the girl took to her heels and went back home crying.

Along the way, she met two men who took her to her father. The girl’s father then reported the matter to the police, leading to Sibanda’s arrest. She was subsequently taken to court, where she was jailed for 24 months.
