A three-month-old baby was kidnapped on Sunday by an unknown woman who had lured the mother into a city saloon to have her hair done.
Investigations have revealed that the baby’s mother was befriended in Glen View, Harare, by the unknown woman, who had promised to take care of some of her needs including getting her hair done.
It is alleged that on Sunday, the woman asked the mother if she could accompany her into the city to collect some cash and visit a saloon. The two went to a saloon where the woman asked the hairdresser to fix the mother’s hair while the mother was holding the baby.
During the process, the woman received a call on her mobile phone and went outside to answer. She returned into the saloon a few minutes later and informed the baby’s mother that she wanted to see someone who wanted to give her some cash and that she would be back.
The woman also asked for US$2 from the hairdresser on the pretext that she would repay when she settled the bill for the hairdo. She then disappeared with the baby and a report was made to the police.
Police questioned the mother and she failed to provide the name and contact numbers for the woman. The mother of the baby then narrated how she had met the suspect and how she had lured her.
Harare provincial spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza said investigations were in progress, but neither the baby nor the woman had been located.
The baby’s father has been circulating audios and the child’s picture on social media, asking anyone with information that might assist in locating the child.
Last month, a woman appeared in court for allegedly kidnapping a five-month-old baby boy in South Africa from her Zimbabwean mother and bringing him to Zimbabwe.
Janet Marimo (28) was charged with human trafficking when she appeared before Harare regional magistrate Mrs Marehwanazvo Gofa.
