POLICE are appealing for information to locate a woman who left her three weeks old baby with a stranger before disappearing.
Matabeleland South acting provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Stanford Mguni said the baby is housed at the Beitbridge District Hospital. She said the woman whose identity is unknown left her baby with a vendor and promised to be back shortly.
“On the 31 May 2024 and at around 1900hours, the informant was at Engene garage in Beitbridge where she operates as a vendor. An unknown female adult approached her and asked her to take care of her three weeks old male infant whilst she proceed to Mussina, South Africa to collect money from Captec since her baby did not have travelling documents.
“She promised to come back after collecting money and gave her cellphone number as 0779804363 and promised to be communicating with the informant. The informant contacted the mother at around 2000 hours on the same day and she told her that she was on her way back. At around 2200 hours the informant contacted the mother again and she was no longer reachable,” he said
Insp Mguni said on the following day the informant took the baby to ZRP Beitbridge Urban where it was further referred to Beitbridge District Hospital for safety.
He appealed to members of the public with information that could lead to identification of the mother to contact the police.
