AN enraged Masvingo woman allegedly scalded her husband of 10 years with boiling cooking oil following a dispute over a phone call from a small house, police confirmed.
Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula said the incident happened on Saturday at around 8PM.
“I can confirm receiving a case of attempted murder involving a wife from Pangolin suburb who scalded her husband following a misunderstanding over a phone call from a girlfriend. The woman has since been arrested and is assisting with investigations. She will soon appear in court facing attempted murder charges,” said Insp Mazula.

According to residents, Tarupiwa Chibundu, 34, of 14219 Jongwe Street, Pangolin, arrived home from a beer drink and found his wife, Chipo Shiriyedende, already preparing to sleep.

“Chibundu is said to have arrived at around 8PM and found his wife in their matrimonial bedroom. The couple are said to have engaged in a heated argument over Chibundu’s alleged girlfriend with Shiriyedende accusing her husband of being promiscuous.

“The argument went on with Chibundu maintaining that he needed time to terminate his affair with the said girlfriend. During the argument, Chibundu’s girlfriend phoned after sending several Whatsapp messages that were ignored. Chibundu then answered the phone and that must have infuriated Shriyedende,” said a neighbour who preferred anonymity.

Another resident, Prudence Chinyerere, said the couple later reached a “truce” after agreeing that they would discuss the issue the following morning since Chibundu was drunk.

“The two then temporarily ironed out their differences, citing Chibundu’s level of sobriety and retired to bed. It was during the wee hours of the morning when all hell broke loose. An irate Shiriyedende woke up, after realising that Chibundu was fast asleep and proceeded to the kitchen.

“She boiled one litre of cooking oil and allegedly emptied it on Chibundu’s face. He sustained serious facial and chest injuries. His right elbow was also severely burnt,” she said.

Chibundu who was in excruciating pain screamed and the noise attracted a neighbour, Rogers Gava, who rushed him to Masvingo General Hospital.

A report was made at Chikato Police Station leading to Shiriyedende’s arrest.
Chibundu’s condition remains critical.
