A Victoria Falls woman has dragged her jailed husband to court seeking a protection order saying she feared for her life when he is released.Bongani Moyo, a former butcher at TM Supermarket, was serving his last days in jail for physical abuse when his determined wife Sinanzeni Ncube of Chinotimba suburb dragged him to court on Monday.
Moyo, serving a nine-month sentence, came face-to-face with a fuming Ncube who told magistrate Sharon Rosemani that she wanted instant separation from her husband of 10 years as she was no longer interested in the marriage.
“He threatened to beat me when he comes from prison. He used to beat me with empty bottles and I’m no longer living in happiness which is why I’m applying for a peace order because he is abusive,” said Ncube.
“At some point he nearly killed me as he assaulted me until I became unconscious. Now that he’ll soon be released, I know he’ll come back to haunt me.”
The couple has two children aged nine and six together.
In response, Moyo said he was surprised by his wife’s remarks and suspected she wanted a protection order to hide her infidelity.
“I don’t understand her behaviour anymore. It seems there is something she is hiding that she doesn’t want me to know. If I beat her up why didn’t she report when the bruises were still fresh, obviously she is up to something,” Moyo said.
He added that he was not happy with the way she was treating their children in his absence.
Said Moyo: “I’m about to be released but I’m not happy about the way she treats my children and how they have changed since I went to prison. I hear they were taken for circumcision without my knowledge and I wonder who signed consent papers on my behalf.”
Moyo said he would not assault his wife again but said he was worried why “she lied” against him.
“I know she is worried because I’ll be released sooner than she expected before she could enjoy life,” he said.
The woman said she would only allow him back if he goes to see her parents who she said were not happy with the way he treated her.
“He shouldn’t lie, I’m not hiding anything. All he needs to do is go and talk to my parents. They know all about this and they are not happy and are tired of him. I want to separate with him because I am afraid his girlfriends would harm me,” she said.
Rosemani granted the order prohibiting Moyo from physically or verbally abusing his wife but advised the two to talk about their marriage. She ordered prison officers to allow the couple to have a private talk in the holding cells about their marriage before Moyo could be taken back to prison.
