Woman sobs over injured snake

PASSENGERS aboard a Gwanda-bound Inter-Africa bus from Zvishavane were left shell-shocked after a woman cried out and demanded to be dropped off so that she could nurse a python that had been injured after being run over by the vehicle.

She claimed the snake was a “gift’ from her ancestors.

The 30-minute drama witnessed by B-Metro occurred on Monday evening, just after the Mimosa Mining Company turn-off, when the unidentified woman, who was accompanied by a middle-aged man, wailed while begging onlookers, some of whom were throwing stones at the 2,5-metre reptile, not to kill it.

“I am the one who spotted it before it was run over by the bus. I am supposed to go and take care of it. I am asking that you let me go with it since it is a gift from my ancestors,” the woman said.

She also seemingly performed rituals while kneeling close to the snake.

The man who was in the company of the woman fearlessly held the python by its tail, much to the shock and wonderment of onlookers.

People kept at bay as the man tried to control the writhing reptile.

Whenever the giant snake tried to break free, people would scream and scurry backwards.

Chaos, however, ensued when some onlookers mustered the courage to confront the man, who was now trying to put it in a sack.

They asked the couple why they wanted to take the reptile.

After a fiery exchange of words, one of the bystanders grabbed the python from the man and ran into the bush.

The couple followed in hot pursuit.

By the time the reporter left the scene, the woman and man were still pleading with the other man to give them back the python.

Meanwhile, pythons are protected species in Zimbabwe.
