WHILE many believe that only women and children are victims of gender-based violence, it’s lesser-known that men can also be victims of abuse and murder.
In a recent case, a 30-year-old woman was arrested for the alleged murder of her 40-year-old ex-boyfriend in Dihatshwane village, near Mahikeng, South Africa.
According to Colonel Adéle Myburgh, a spokeswoman for the North West police, the arrest followed an incident that took place on the evening of 18 July 2024.
“This comes after her ex-boyfriend invited her over to his residence. Upon her arrival, a conflict ensued, during which she allegedly strangled and stabbed him in the chest before fleeing the scene,” Colonel Myburgh explained.
The police were alerted the following morning by a family member of the accused.
“After discovering the deceased, the suspect was apprehended and is slated to appear at the Mmabatho Magistrate’s Court on a murder charge this Monday, 22 July 2024,” she added.
Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, the provincial police commissioner of North West, praised the Mahikeng police for their swift action in making the arrest.
