The acting provincial police spokesperson for Matabeleland South, Sergeant Loveness Mangena, said the incident occurred on Wednesday at about 7am at the 265km peg along the Beitbridge-Bulawayo railway line.
“On the fateful day, the woman, who is suspected to have been mentally ill, left her home and went to a nearby railway line where she waited for the train. When the goods train approached, she threw herself into the railway track resulting in her being hit,” said Sgt Mangena.
The engineman then stopped so that he could ascertain the woman’s condition before he reported the matter to the police.
Sgt Mangena identified the dead woman as Annet Ndlovu from Irisvale area in Esigodini. She sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to UBH where she died on admission.
