Woman to lose house, car over $10k club money

A WOMAN from Njube suburb in Bulawayo has had her house and car attached after allegedly embezzling more than $10 000 from a women’s club where she was treasurer.

Mrs Beauty Ngwenya (57) was the treasurer for Get Together Club in Njube for four years before she allegedly embezzled $10 900 that the club members had given her for safekeeping as they were not banking their money.

A source told the Sunday News that they were supposed to share groceries and money on 17 December last year but when they met at Mrs Ngwenya’s house on that date, she said they could not share the money but would share it on 23 December.

She, however, failed to produce the money on the date she had suggested prompting the club members to report the matter to the lawyers.

“For all these years she has been loyal to the club and we do not know what happened this time but all what we got from her were funny stories that we couldn’t handle and we decided to take her to the lawyers. She said she lent the money to certain individuals but she did not mention their names,” said the source.

It is alleged that Mrs Ngwenya has formed another club, which also meets at her house. Mrs Ngwenya admitted to Sunday News that she took the money and promised that she would pay it back. She said that she had reached an agreement with the other club members and had agreed that she will pay $5 500 at the end of January and $5 400 at the end of February.

In the event that she failed to pay back the amount owed, Mrs Ngwenya and her husband Mr Godfrey Ngwenya said they would sell their house in Nkulumane suburb and a Honda Fit. Sunday News has the copy of a memorandum of agreement that was signed by Mr Ngwenya, Mrs Ngwenya and Get Together club representative Mrs Nyarai Mabena.

Mrs Ngwenya said, “I will pay back their money, the problem is that it is difficult to get cash but I won’t sleep until I raise their money.”
