A BULAWAYO woman dipped her fingers into the coffers of her burial society and stole more than $8,000 which she squandered, a court heard.Between January 2010 and 2013, Sibusisiwe Gumede of Emganwini betrayed the trust bestowed on her by Sizanani Burial Society when she allegedly converted $8,144 to her own use.

Prosecuting, Tatenda Dakwa told the Western Commonage Magistrates’ Court that the fraud came to light last week when some bereaved members of the group approached her seeking money for funeral expenses.

“On being approached by other members of  the burial society, Gumede indicated that she did not have the money and they reported the matter to  the police leading to her arrest and subsequent  recovery of part of the money amounting to $875,” said Dakwa.

Gumede was not asked to plead to theft charges and she was remanded out of custody to January 14 for trial.
