adminPietermaritzburg – A woman’s car insurance scam backfired on her when the man she asked to burn her car instead kept it for himself.
As a result, the 26-year-old woman faces perjury charges after she reported her car missing, and filled out a false insurance claim, claiming the car had been stolen.
Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said that the woman claimed she locked her car properly when she parked it on Friday at 20:00.
She claimed that when she returned at around 22:15, she found that her car had been stolen and reported this to the police, said Zwane.
Zwane said during the investigation police were tipped off about a suspicious-looking vehicle without number plates parked at Emboyi, near the Mkhambathini area.
Police then confirmed with radio control that it was stolen.
“An investigation led to the arrest of a 29-year-old man. After questioning the suspect, he informed the investigations team that the complainant told him that he must take the car and have it burnt,” said Zwane.
But the man instead took the vehicle and hid it at Emboyi. The pair will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court shortly.
Sources close to the investigation said the woman was in financial difficulties and the car was valued at R65 000. – Sapa
