The remains of a Mutoko woman who went missing 14 years ago have been found and police are now investigating the suspected murder case.
Elizabeth Chidamuhwa was aged 36 at the time she went missing in 2007 and was reported missing by her relatives in 2008.
The late Chidamuhwa’s remains, which have since been buried in Nemurinda Village under Chief Chimoyo, Mutoko, were found on the banks of a river after a 12-year-old boy from the same village reportedly went into a trance and narrated how Elizabeth was murdered.
Reports are that the boy fingered two suspects, including his father Simbai Janjanja, who was the deceased’s husband. Another villager only identified as Machivi was named as the second suspect.
While still under the trance, the boy also revealed where Elizabeth had been buried after the alleged murder.
Police spokesperson for Mashonaland East Province Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi confirmed the incident.
“On September 21, this year, Sauro Chidamuhwa of Bopoto village under Chief Chimoyo in Mutoko reported a case of suspected murder which is believed to have occurred in 2007.
“Elizabeth Chidamuhwa went missing on February 9, 2007 in Nemurinda village under Chief Chimoyo where she was residing with her husband Simbai Janjanja.
“Elizabeth was mentally challenged. Family members searched for her but with no success resulting in them reporting a missing person at Mutoko Police Station sometime in 2008.
“On September 19, 2021, Janjanja’s 12-year-old son went into a trance and revealed that Elizabeth was killed by his father Simbai and another suspect called Machivi. Simbai died in 2019.”
Insp Chazovachiyi said on September 21, 2021 the remains were retrieved and buried in the same village.
He said the matter was now under investigation. Several bones were recovered but police could not find the skull.
Machivi disappeared after Elizabeth’s remains were recovered and police are now hunting for him.
