Women should fight stereotypes and societal imbalances to create an equitable environment for all, Transport and Infrastructural Development Permanent Secretary Engineer Joy Makumbe has said.
In her presentation on “Redefining Leadership, One Woman at a Time” during belated International Women’s Day commemorations that were held early this week Engineer Makumbe challenged women to lead by example and to be leaders who inspire change through deeds.
“Women should strive to fight stereotypes and societal imbalances and they should not be obstructed by these obstacles but must confront and overcome them with unwavering determination.”
Eng Makumbe said companies needed to establish policies and initiatives that advance women in leadership roles.
An equitable environment was key to diverse leadership and also highlighted the importance of proper guidance and support.
She said formal mentorship and sponsorship programmes were instrumental in aiding women through their leadership paths, providing necessary resources and networks.
Eng Makumbe concluded her presentation by encouraging organisations to create a culture where every voice would be heard and respected, and where every individual thrives.
CMED board chairperson Engineer Tammy Mary Stevenson also said stereotypes reinforce power imbalances at workplaces.
“The major drawback with these stereotypes is (that) they reinforce power imbalances contributing to gender-based violence, thereby hindering progress towards a more equitable society and working environment.
“To break these stereotypes requires collective action, regardless of gender to bring out authenticity by embracing diversity thereby creating an environment that celebrates our unique qualities and strengths.
“As professionals I strongly encourage that we continue overhauling our workplaces, rigid gender stereotypes should be exorcised along with their corrosive effects,” Eng Stevenson said.
The event was attended by officials from the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA), CMED, National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ), Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ), Air Zimbabwe, National Handling Services, Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe and Air Zimbabwe, among others.
International Women’s Day is commemorated annually on March 8 as a focal point in the women’s rights movement.
The day focuses on issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.
