Women cricket team intensify preperations

Harare Bureau
THE Zimbabwe women’s cricket team have upped their preparations ahead of their World Cup qualifiers in Bangkok, Thailand.

The team is expected to leave for Bangladesh on November 13 where they will take part in two T-20 warm-up matches prior to the final qualifiers.

Hosts Thailand are also joined by China, Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, Scotland and Zimbabwe who qualified through regional tournaments.

The Zimbabweans have not qualified for the World Cup before.

And coach Trevor Phiri has hopes they will do well this time.

“The morale is high in the camp and the girls are looking forward to going and winning, to send a message that we have been working hard towards qualifying for the World Cup,” he said during their training session at Alex Sports Club.

“In South Africa we wanted to test the team and see where we are headed, to measure our strengths and weaknesses. And now we know what we need to work on.

“It was a good performance, we went there and gave them a good challenge and as we entered into camp we knew the areas we needed to work on and polish before our biggest test.

“Everyone is geared up and we all have high hopes for this tournament because if we win it would be the first time for the women’s team to qualify for the World Cup.

Group A: Bangladesh, Papua New Guinea, Thailand and Scotland.
