GOSPEL music fans were treated to highly entertaining music from a number of gospel musicians that gathered at Bulawayo Theatre on Sunday. The show, dubbed Women in Gospel, was organised by Bulawayo Gospel Artistes and it featured both established and up-and-coming gospel musicians.
With a high turnout, musicians such as Dumisani Nyongola, Pastor Joyce Mungofa, Mai Aidah Mangwiro, Abigal Mwembe and Qolani Mlangeni thrilled fans with good performances.
Speaking on the sidelines of the show, Pastor Joyce Mungofa said she was happy with how successful the show had been and was happy with the support they received.
“The show was meant to revive the dying gospel music in the city and to incorporate more women in the genre. We are happy fans and musicians alike supported this initiative,” she said.
Pastor Mungofa said this was the beginning of good things and more gospel musicians are free to join the group.
“It is not only about us, but for everyone in the city, especially women. We are calling all to come and join our group as it is open to anyone who wants to give a helping hand,” she said.
Speaking after her performance, Mai Mangwiro said she was happy with the way Bulawayo musicians responded to their call for oneness.
“Our main aim for doing such a show was to encourage a spirit of working together among gospel musicians. When we are united, nothing can stop us from achieving what we set out to achieve. We want to revive gospel music in the city and this is a good start,” she said.
Mai Mangwiro said talent which was crying out to be exposed was exhibited at the show and this was evidence that Bulawayo artistes need to come together in order to have a vibrant sector, which preaches through song.
“Today we showcased cultural dances, poetry, and singing, among others and we intend to continue with such activities for the empowerment of those involved in such programmes. We want this to be an annual event which will benefit local gospel artistes,” she said.
Dumisani “Dumie” Nyongola thanked fans for coming in their numbers to support gospel music which he said was now getting exposure.
“I am happy that local people are beginning to appreciate and support gospel musicians. If this continues, Bulawayo will soon have its own gospel idols, which fans can look up to,” he said.
