WOMEN in sport will have an opportunity to learn more about the sector when they converge on the Crowne Plaza Monomotapa today for a seminar that is being organised by the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee.
The two-day Women and Sport Leadership seminar starts today and ends tomorrow with 30 invited participants drawn from various sporting disciplines, the media, corporate sector and educational institutions taking part. This follows recommendations drawn from a survey conducted by the ZOC Women and Sport Commission to assess the number of women in administrative or leadership positions in national sports associations.
The seminar aims to strengthen the capacities of a targeted group of women with a view to creating a strong base of women leaders in sport.
ZOC’s Women and Sport Commission chairperson, Letitia Chipandu, said the workshop was a platform for women to get a better insight of the field.
“This means a lot to us, firstly to me as the chairperson for the Women Commission. It’s a platform to meet other women and share experiences, challenges and achievements. It’s a way to try and sensitise women on the issues that are there. When these women administrators come they get sensitised on those topical issues,” said Chipandu. She hoped the two-day seminar will help improve and encourage more women to participate in sport at a higher level.
“When they get back they will be better women, better equipped to manage their associations and better equipped to inform other women to participate in sport.
“The issue is we fail to make it to the top because we lack confidence. If you look in most of these boards there are more men. We are trying to get women on board, we would want to see more women coming in,” said Chipandu. Today the executive director of Zimbabwe Business Council on Aids, David Mutambara, will take the participants through key governance and management concepts with specific focus on challenges faced by women in this male-dominated domain. The seminar ends tomorrow with a series of speakers and presenters sharing experiences with the women in a networking and confidence building session.
Sport, Arts and Culture Deputy Minister Tabetha Kanengoni-Malinga will address one of the sessions.
The seminar will be officially opened tomorrow by ZOC vice president Busi Chindove.
