Women-Led Eye Care Institutions get thumbs up

THE Ministry of Women’s Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development has commended women-led healthcare institutions for playing a pivotal role in improving access to affordable eye care services and strengthening community wellness programmes in Zimbabwe.

In a statement following a recent visit by Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister Monica Mutsvangwa to Optical Express Optometrists and Dr Washaya’s Eye and Glaucoma Institute, the ministry said the institutions were making a significant contribution towards healthcare delivery, innovation and community empowerment.

The institutions are led by eye specialists Dr Jennifer Washaya and Dr Priscah Mufunde.

According to the ministry, the visit highlighted the growing role of women entrepreneurs in transforming healthcare access through small and medium enterprises.

“Honourable Minister Monica Mutsvangwa recently visited Optical Express Optometrists and Dr Washaya’s Eye and Glaucoma Institute, celebrating the powerful role women-led enterprises are playing in transforming healthcare access in Zimbabwe,” the ministry said.

It said the institutions were providing quality and affordable eye care services while spearheading community outreach initiatives that include glaucoma screening, public education, mentorship and mobile eye care programmes.

“The Minister acknowledged the remarkable contribution of women entrepreneurs in healthcare, highlighting how women-led SMEs are driving innovation, creating impact and supporting Government wellness and inclusivity programmes,” the ministry said.

During the visit, Minister Mutsvangwa and ministry officials underwent comprehensive eye screening examinations as part of efforts to promote preventive healthcare and early glaucoma detection.

The ministry said the development reflected increasing recognition of the importance of creating enabling environments that empower women in business and healthcare leadership.

Deputy Minister Kiven Mutimbanyoka described the initiative as commendable and inspiring.

“A commendable and inspiring initiative by Honourable Minister Monica Mutsvangwa in supporting women-led enterprises that are transforming healthcare delivery in Zimbabwe,” he said.

“The outstanding work being done by Dr Jennifer Washaya and Dr Priscah Mufunde through Optical Express Optometrists and the Eye and Glaucoma Institute is a true reflection of how women entrepreneurs continue to make a meaningful impact in communities through innovation, empowerment, and accessible healthcare services.”

Deputy Minister Mutimbanyoka said the institutions’ commitment to glaucoma awareness, outreach programmes and affordable healthcare was helping improve lives while advancing national wellness goals.
