TWO suspected prostitutes from Bulawayo’s Pumula suburb allegedly stabbed a 29-year-old man three times after he refused to buy them beer. Brighton Mapfumo is battling for life at Mpilo Central hospital after he sustained serious injuries.Wendy Goremucheche, 20 and Ayanda Gumede, 20, appeared before Western Commonage provincial magistrate Willard Maphios Moyo facing assault charges. The pair was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to December 10.
Prosecuting Mufaro Mageza opposed bail saying chances were high the charge could be commuted to murder, considering Mapfumo’s state. “Goremucheche and Gumede should be remanded in custody till we know the complainant’s condition. He is still admitted in hospital and his condition might worsen,” he said.
The court heard that on November 30 at around 6PM at Pumula old beer garden, the pair approached Mapfumo who was drinking beer with his brother. They demanded beer from him and he refused to buy the liquor because he said they were strangers.
Goremucheche allegedly pushed him and stabbed him on the head with an okapi knife. When he was still lying helpless on the floor, Gumede stabbed him twice on the chest and Mapfumo bled until he fell unconscious.
The matter was reported to the police leading to the pair’s arrest. Mapfumo was rushed to hospital and a medical report was produced as evidence.
The court heard Mapfumo is still fighting for life in hospital and can hardly talk.
The pair told the court that they did not know Mapfumo.
