Women’s health: Accelerating action for a healthier tomorrow

MARCH is not only the gateway to autumn; it is also a month dedicated to celebrating women’s resilience, achievements and health.

As the world commemorated International Women’s Day on March 8, under the theme “For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment”, we were reminded of the urgent need to prioritise women’s health and dismantle barriers to care.

At Premier Service Medical Aid Society (PSMAS), we are proud to support our female members by offering tailored healthcare services and support programmes that empower them to take charge of their well-being.

Prevention saves lives: The power of early detection

The adage “prevention is better than cure” is especially true for women’s health. Cervical and breast cancers are leading health threats, yet both can be treated effectively if detected early.According to the Globocan 2022 report, cervical cancer is the most common cancer among women in Zimbabwe, accounting for 31,4 percent of all cancers.

Breast cancer is the second most prevalent, representing 12 percent of all cancers. Our medical aid covers cancer screenings and treatments.

Cervical cancer screenings: Pap smears, HPV testing and visual inspection with acetic acid are used to identify precancerous changes. These screenings can be done during wellness outreach programmes or by visiting any PSMAS branch for assistance. A general practitioner within the PSMAS network can prescribe these tests based on a member’s benefits and scheme eligibility. Women diagnosed with cancer are enrolled in the PSMAS Disease Management Programme, where their treatment is facilitated.

Breast cancer screenings: Include breast scans and guidance on performing breast self-examinations. Women with identified issues are referred for mammograms. Members diagnosed with breast cancer are also enrolled in the Disease Management Programme, where treatment is facilitated within the PSMAS network.

Body mass index (BMI): BMI is a globally used tool to assess whether a person’s weight is within a healthy range relative to their height. While it is not a flawless measure of individual health, it serves as a critical starting point for identifying risks and guiding proactive care.

For women, maintaining a healthy BMI can help reduce the likelihood of obesity and reproductive health complications. Obesity increases the risks of type 2 diabetes, heart diseases and hypertension.Early detection is not just a medical strategy — it is a lifeline. Nearly 99 percent of cervical cancer cases globally are preventable with timely interventions. By leveraging these services, women can take decisive steps to safeguard their health.

Community and care: Support programmes that uplift women

Health journeys are rarely walked alone.

For women navigating pregnancy, obesity or chronic conditions such as hypertension or diabetes, our care programmes offer safe spaces for growth and resilience.

Members are grouped into peer networks, where they:

Share experiences and strategies for managing conditions.

Access nutritionists, mental health counsellors and fitness experts.

Exchange tips on weight management.

Learn strategies for chronic disease control.

These programmes recognise that health is holistic — encompassing the physical, emotional and social well-being. By fostering the community aspect, we help women accelerate their progress towards their health goals.

Accelerate action:            Aligning with global    women’s health goals

The 2025 International Women’s Day theme challenges us to move beyond awareness and into action.

At Premier Service Medical Aid Society, this means:

Breaking stigma — Encouraging open conversations about reproductive health, mental wellness and body positivity.

Closing gaps — Ensuring rural and marginalised women can access screenings and care through our outreach programmes across the country.
