The Zanu PF Women’s League has thrown its weight behind the Government’s clampdown on corruption.
This comes as President Mnangagwa’s administration is leaving no stone unturned in bringing all corrupt elements to book with the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) on the warpath against graft.
Among high-profile people, who have come under the microscope for graft, is former police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri, who is accused of side-tracking public funds amounting to US$32 million.
Chihuri allegedly used the loot to fund his family’s companies and to buy properties during his tenure as the country’s top cop.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) got a High Court order forcing him to explain his wealth, links and interest in a number of companies and properties that he and his family acquired during his tenure as the country’s top cop.
Zanu PF secretary for the Women’s League Cde Mabel Chinomona yesterday berated Chihuri for trying to hide his corrupt tendencies behind politics.
Addressing thousands of women, including the physically-challenged during the handover of food hampers sourced by the league to cushion families against challenges spawned by Covid-19 at Nemanwa Growth Point, Cde Chinomona said the fight against corruption should be intensified.
She took a swipe at Chihuri for trying to waste the nation’s time and diverting attention from the serious allegations he was facing.
“As the Women’s League we want to make it very clear that we are fully behind the fight against corruption by President Mnangagwa and there are people like Chihuri who are trying to make unsubstantiated allegations because they are being asked to explain their wealth. He (Chihuri) should not waste the nation’s time and just explain the source of his wealth,” said Cde Chinomona, who is also the Senate President.
The Women’s League boss said economic saboteurs behind wanton increases of prices and other vices choking the economy should be dealt with.
She warned those plotting against the President and his Government that their motives were known and doomed to fail dismally.
“Do not think that if you are plotting we do not know what you are doing, we are watching and do not say in future that we didn’t warn you. It will be payback time in future,” Cde
She said the Government deserved a pat on the back for steering the War Veterans Bill which seeks to improve the welfare of former freedom fighters, among other benefits.
Cde Chinomona thanked President Mnangagwa’s administration for remembering vulnerable people in rural areas by assisting them with food, a development she said showed that the ruling party cared for its people.
Zanu PF Masvingo chair Cde Ezra Chadzamira said the province was grateful to President Mnangagwa for various interventions by his Government to cushion ordinary people in the province and other parts of the country.
Cde Chadzamira, who is also the Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs, said while the country has been under illegal sanctions over the past decade, the ruling party leadership continued to introduce programmes to ease the people’s plight.
“We want to thank President Mnangagwa and his Government for introducing affordable Zupco buses to improve the transport system but we also appeal for the buses to increase their routes into remote rural areas where our people are struggling to get transport.”
Cde Chadzamira accused some transport operators of profiteering by charging exorbitant fares while other businesses were under the spotlight for divert subsidised roller meal to the black market.
Zanu PF secretary for Security in the Politburo Cde Lovemore Matuke said Masvingo remained solidly behind President Mnangagwa and was a united party.
Cde Chinomona handed over food hampers comprising maize-meal, cooking oil and soap to women who graced the event, who included the physically-challenged.
The event was graced by other top ruling party officials among them politburo member Cde Josaya Hungwe and other senior members of the ruling party national Women’s League and the Youth League.
