adminThe organisers of a Spanish running race have been forced to apologise to the winner after she was offered a food processor.
The Carrera de la Mujer – a 7km women’s race in Madrid that was held on Mother’s Day – has been accused of sexism. The award had been donated by a sponsor, and the race suggested it hadn’t believed it would have had sexist implications.
A statement read: “We understand that seen from a biased perspective it can generate some controversy, and we apologise if it has been and if any woman could have felt offended.
“But it is a product that we consider does not have a sexist character and that is ideal for any athlete who wants to improve their nutritional habits. In any case, we accept the criticism, we reiterate our apologies if someone has been offended, and we promise to take measures to avoid this controversy in the future.”
They added: “We are aware of the fight for the eradication of any sexist stereotype… In the case of Madrid, one of the sponsoring brands has given the winner a kitchen robot of high economic value, aligned with our concept of promoting healthy values in women’s sports and nutritional habits.”
Serbia’s Ivana Zagorac won the race – which is designed to support domestic violence victims and cancer survivors.
However, the prize went largely unnoticed until Ángela Rodríguez, Spain’s secretary of state for equality, tweeted about the prize, and how others were given 0 percent fat products.
“If you win: housewife and if not at least you’ll lose weight!
“The problem is not what is ‘pink’ but that companies use it to cover up what is important, such as the fight against machismo.” The race has previously featured t-shirts with the slogan: “Today girls win!” – Daily Star.
