THE Zimbabwe Women’s Premier Soccer League played its last round of matches ahead of the mid-season break, which starts this weekend.

Chapungu Queens ensured that they stayed at the top of the standings with a 3-0 win over Kwekwe United in a Midlands derby played at Mbizo Stadium, Kwekwe on Saturday.

The log leaders at the halfway stage find themselves tied on 40 points with Correctional Queens.

The Gweru, Airforce of Zimbabwe side boasts a superior goal difference. They have a plus 50 advantage having scored 53 and conceded three, while their opponents let in six and scored 42.

Ethel Chinyerere scored two goals in the eighth and 17th minute and Edline Mutumbami sealed the scoring in the 67th minute to seal Kwekwe United’s fate.

Correctional Queens beat Highlanders Royals 1-0 at Bulawayo Chiefs Village on Saturday.

Talent Chitsaka, the Chapungu secretary, said that their win against Kwekwe Queens was a crucial away result, describing the first round of matches as exciting.

“Now, we can take time to critically reflect and evaluate our first round performances in preparation for the second, and our goal remains the same to keep working hard,” said Chitsaka.

He said they will soon reveal their mid-season transfer window acquisitions.

Herentals Queens go into the break lying third, two points behind the joint leaders.

Herentals were 1-0 winners over Faith Drive Academy at Gwanzura Stadium.

Red Buffalo Sports Academy, who had a porous defence, conceding 105 goals this season, got their first point in their weekend match against Black Mambas, which ended in a 1-1 deadlock.

Both teams are equally struggling this season as they are the bottom two.

Mpopoma Sports Academy (Mposa) will play host to Platinum Royals at Bulawayo Chiefs Village on Wednesday afternoon in a re-arranged fixture after the match was postponed due to their players being involved with national teams.

“Credit goes to the players, who are showing hard work, these points will help us a lot on our objective to remain in the league,” said Evans Netha, Mposa coach, whose debuting team lies seventh on the log.
