Work as usual at hospitals: Survey

Patients are receiving treatment as usual from all public health institutions despite claims by some sections of the media that nurses were on “go-slow”. A snap survey by The Herald to Harare, Parirenyatwa and Chitungwiza hospitals showed that all health workers were attending to patients without restrictions.

“I have not seen any signs of a go slow. People are being attended to as usual,” said Mrs Rukudzo Mwendera of Harare, who was receiving treatment at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
Earlier in the week, private media claimed that nurses had embarked on a go-slow.

However, Zimbabwe Nurses Association President Mr Enock Dongo said they were not on strike.
“We are not on strike, but what we have said is that we have become incapacitated to continue reporting for work every day, hence we are reporting for work twice for this week after which we will review our position depending on Government’s response to our plea,” said Mr Dongo.

Mr Dongo said they were following a duty roster that ensure that patients would be attended to at any given time at all institutions throughout the week.

Although no official comment could be obtained from the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association, sources close to the happenings said they too were reporting for work every day since expiration of the Health Apex ultimatum last Thursday.

“We have all been reporting for work since expiration of the 14-day ultimatum last Thursday because the Health Apex advised that if there is going to be a strike, it will start on Monday, 24 June,” said one of the sources.

The Health Apex last week indicated that its members will down tools starting next Monday should their employer, the Health Services Board, fail to act on cost of living adjustment.

According to HSB, review of cost of living adjustments for all civil servants, health workers included was now being handled by Government.
