WORKERS at Lilian Mine, in Bubi district, Matabeleland North province staged a demonstration yesterday, protesting the alleged unfair persecution of their mine manager, Mr Charles Moyo.
The workers claim that Mr Moyo was targeted after he refused to compromise on safety protocols, insisting that the mine owner, Mr Siqeduthando Ncube, provide a safe working environment.
The demonstration was organised by the workers and representatives of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Union (ZCTU).
According to workers’ representatives, Mr Moyo’s stance led to a clash with Mr Ncube, who used his connections with the police and ruling Zanu-PF party to have Mr Moyo arrested on trumped-up charges.
“The manager was just doing his job, ensuring our safety, and now he’s being punished for it,” said a worker’s representative. “We demand his immediate release and an end to this harassment.”
The workers allege that during a search of Mr Moyo’s house, police found campaign material belonging to the Mthwakazi Republic Party, which they believe is the real reason behind his persecution.
“We are honestly demanding justice, if there is anything it is Mr Ncube who has to be arrested not the mine manager,” said the workers.
The demonstration comes amid growing concerns over worker safety and exploitation in the mining industry. The workers’ representatives vowed to continue protesting until their demands are met.
“We will not back down until justice is served,” they said.
