THE 60th anniversary of the launch of the World Day of Prayer will be held at the Anglican Church Cathedral in Harare on Thursday.
Pioneered by women from the Salvation Army and Methodist Church in the late 1950s, the World Day of Prayer is commemorated annually on the first Friday of March.
The anniversary celebrations will be held under the theme “Rise, take your mat and walk”, taken from John 5:2-9.
The event is geared towards praying for a specific country every year.
World Day of Prayer Zimbabwe public relations officer, Ms Sylvia Marowa, said the prayer meeting will raise the banner of protection for countries to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Through unity, as women, we are doing good by uplifting our nation and the communities we live in with prayer,” she said.
“Right now, we have a group that is assisting women who have children with disability.
“It was born out of the goodness of unity through commemorating the day. So, we are calling on people to join us in this vigil to thank God, who has taken us this far.”
Committee members of the initiative, Bishop Jonathan Maposa and Dr Apostle Frederick Chitate, called on men to participate in the event.
“We admire this initiative, recognising that God gave these women wisdom to pioneer it.
“We are grateful to participate and help deal with issues of drug abuse and breakdown of marriages being caused by social ills in communities and which require unity in prayer.”
