World Evangelism: Easter Mandate!

Its Easter time and I know that millions of Christian families are at their church services today celebrating the resurrection of their Lord and Redeemer Jesus Christ. He rose from the grave 2016 years ago and gave His believers a great commission of evangelising the world and making disciples in all nations. As we celebrate Easter, my prayer and my hope is that we will not lose focus to the intrinsic purpose of His death and resurrection.

It is all about the salvation of humanity and each one of us therefore has a “world” to preach to and teach about Christ. Today I just want to make a plea by reminding you of a few basic ways you can celebrate your Easter. This way I think there would be great impact and meaning in our relationship with the Christ of God. Let me show you a few ways of celebrating this Easter in a world like ours today, a world full of brokenness and an anti-Christ attitude. It is so exciting to always start in your “world” and I want to show you, your world therefore.

Start at home. As a family have time to celebrate together, pray together and read scriptures together. Minister to each other and pray jointly and enjoy the resurrection power at home first. Tell the family the Easter story and its purpose and make sure they have a relationship with Christ. I have a challenge with us preachers and teachers of the word who are unwilling to share the gospel with our families, our own first world, but want to go out there and celebrate with others. Let it start at home please. Have communion today as a family. See the unity it brings to this great godly institution. Remember that the first Passover in Exodus was celebrated at family level, even if it was national. It was symbolic of this Easter Celebration. The family matters in these things.

Your world includes your maids, gardeners and other workers. Share the Easter story with them too. I was just thinking as I wrote this in my heart first, how many of us really give such time to our workers. They are serving you but you cannot share the good news with them. To me this is cruel. You have a big company and many workers who are working for you and making money for you and this Sunday you are going to celebrate the gift of Salvation but you cannot share with them.

Beloved, Let us all remember that He died so we could be saved and share the good news with everyone around us. Before you attend the church service today and preach or teach or serve or do anything, share the good news and love with your immediate world. Do not be afraid and be a hypocrite at the end of it all.

Remember others. Maybe as you fellowship as a family today, you can choose to remember others out there. There are 120 million orphans in the world. There are 140 million children living on the streets of the world’s beautiful cities though some of the cities are destroyed now. There is an increase in STIs among adolescents in Zimbabwe alone. 11 girls under 16 are raped each day in Zimbabwe. To make matters worse, they are raped by their relatives.

This shows that the family is not reaching out to its own with the gospel of the good news. Wife battering is on the increase. The divorce rate is so high even in your neighbourhood. Many children have dropped out of school due to the current drought situation in southern Africa. Over 5 billion people in the world still do not know the Lord Jesus Christ. Maybe you can be real in your celebrations this Easter and focus on the very purpose of His dying and resurrection. Beloved, it is beyond the eggs and tea and just our Sunday rituals and all that. The world wants hope and healing. You have it all in your hands, words, steps and everything. Give it away.

My prayer these days is that there is going to be a revival in the manner we do church. We need to step out of tradition and culture and do what the Spirit wants us to do. Back to my subject. Will it not be a better way of celebrating Easter, if you prayed for all these people we have mentioned? Yes, first as a family. Teach your children to be others focused in their Christian walk. Teach them that the gospel is about going out there and doing good to others more than it is about our gatherings and rituals. Instil in them the sense of evangelising the world.

I could say a lot but am avoiding being controversial, at least for now. The family is the best place for celebrating Easter and the power thereof. Let us start there. Before you would stand up on your pulpit today, minister to your family first. Reach out to your relatives. Start there. Go forth from there.

We need to come to a point where we understand the value and the role of the family in God’s plan for the spreading of the gospel. Happy Easter to you all in your families today. Let every good thing the blood of Jesus speaks about you come to pass.
