Some of the workers were dismissed early last year and the last group was fired in June this year prompting them to take legal action against the organisation. The workers said they were owed more than $2 000 each in unpaid allowances, underpayment and overtime since 2008.
Hundreds of security staff in the southern region, which covers Bulawayo, Bubi, Nkayi, Plumtree, Insiza, Beitbridge and Victoria Falls among others, had their contracts terminated by the NGO.
The employees who worked for the organisation for three years, said they were paid $61 as exit package.
The matter was taken to the Labour Court in Bulawayo, which referred it back to the National Employment Council (NEC) for Welfare and Education institutions, an affiliate of the Zimbabwe
Educational, Scientific, Social and Cultural Workers’ Union (ZESSCUWU) for reconciliation.
The arbitrator, Mr Gibson Munashe Munyoro, an agent with the NEC yesterday ordered World Vision to pay $484,80 to each of the former security guards and $677,24 to each of the five supervisors.
