Wrestling ends in tragedy

The provincial police spokesperson for Matabeleland South, Inspector Philisani Ndebele, said the incident occurred on Sunday at about 4pm at Ngoma area of Zezani in Beitbridge District.

He identified the deceased as Zenzo Ncube of Ngoma Village.

“On the fateful day, Ncube was in the company of his 14-year-old cousin, Honest Siziba and they were looking for their stray donkeys at a local borehole.

“On arrival at the water point, the two brothers met the suspect, Austin Ncube who was also in the company of his          younger brother, Nkosiyalinda Ngwenya (11) during which Zenzo started playing a wrestling game with Nkosiyalinda,” said Insp Ndebele.

However, while the two were playing, Zenzo dragged Nkosiyalinda and he fell down and he started crying prompting the suspect to intervene on behalf of his younger brother.

“It appears Austin was angered by Zenzo’s actions and he then confronted him during which an altercation ensued     resulting in the suspect pulling out a knife and stabbing  Zenzo once in the neck and he collapsed and died,” Insp Ndebele said.

Soon after committing the offence, the suspect fled from the scene leaving Zenzo’s lifeless body lying in a pool of blood.

A report was made to the police leading to the arrest of the suspect.

The body was taken to Beitbridge  District Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.

“As police we would like to warn people against moving around carrying knives. We also urge members of the public to desist from the culture of violence in the event of disputes to avoid unnecessary loss of life,” said the police spokesperson.
