THE recent xenophobia attacks against foreigners in the neighbouring South Africa are likely to affect the third anniversary celebrations for local radio station Skyz Metro FM who are bringing Dr Malinga as their main act.
The gig is set for Saturday 7 September at the City Hall car park from 6pm to 6am.
Courtesy of such xenophobia attacks, the Bulawayo showbiz history archives have it that such African ethnic unrests have an impact on South Africans’ shows in Bulawayo grounds.
In 2015, the now defunct Durban Kwaito outfit Big Nuz cancelled a show in the city over fears of xenophobia reprisals.
However, the call for a boycott of Dr Malinga’s performance in the city that has erupted on different social media sites can fall on deaf ears as some people in the City of Kings are keen on gracing the event.
Just like the way people turned out for the 2015 Casper Nyovest gig which was held at Hartsfield, Nyovest used the platform to preach and advocate for the end of xenophobia.
Dr Malinga, who is coming to the city under the watch of Skyz Metro FM’s Umcimbi Wabantu celebration has an opportunity to spread togetherness in the show and promote unity between South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Skyz Metro FM station manager Godwin Phiri revealed that there was nothing stopping their third anniversary celebrations as everything was ready for the gig to light up Bulawayo.
“All is set and Dr Malinga confirmed his appearance at the gig, Umcimbi Wabantu is going on and we promise our listeners a much bigger and better celebration.
“We have a massive security system for both the people who will attend the gig and their cars, so they must not worry about any safety issues because we have that in place,” said Phiri.
Local artistes who will perform alongside Dr Malinga at the Ingwebu brewery sponsored celebration include Asaph, Cal_vin, Novuyo Seagirl, Hwabaraty, Gazelimnyama, and songbird Lee McHoney.
