THE Bulawayo city centre is alive with the sights and sounds of Christmas. Parents, children in tow, weave through crowded streets, their arms loaded with gifts, clothes and stationery. China shops and local boutiques are bustling as mothers hunt for the perfect outfits for their kids and the essentials for the year ahead.
“The amount of pressure we have during the festive season is too much, but it is always a joy to see a child smile because of a toy they have received from their parent,” said an anonymous shopkeeper, wiping sweat from her brow as another family dashed past her till.

The energy is infectious, but the excitement comes with its own worries. Pickpockets lurk in the busy aisles, and shoplifters see the Christmas rush as an opportunity. “It is good to have a lot of customers coming in and out of our shops happy, but we worry about their safety as pickpockets are always on alert,” the shopkeeper added, keeping a wary eye on the crowd.
One of the busiest clothing stores in the CBD, has gone the extra mile to protect shoppers. Cameras track every corner of the store, alarms safeguard high-value items, and a security guard stands at the entrance, checking everyone who leaves. These measures ensure both customers and staff can enjoy the festive buzz without fear.

Shoppers are noticing the difference. Lindiwe Moyo from Cowdray Park said, “I am happy that I can now buy my stuff without having to look over my shoulder whenever I’m in a store. They have helped us and eased our conscience.”
As festive tunes play over loudspeakers, children squeal in delight as they clutch new toys. Parents exchange cheerful greetings while haggling over prices and checking lists for last-minute gifts. Street vendors add to the chaos, selling roasted peanuts, festive decorations, and colourful stationery to eager shoppers.

Even with the crowding and occasional stress, the CBD is alive with holiday spirit. Shopkeepers and shoppers alike have embraced the Christmas buzz, finding a mix of challenge and joy in the holiday frenzy. The city’s heart beats faster during this season, proving that while the rush can be exhausting, the smiles on children’s faces make it all worthwhile.
