THE Young Flying Stars Soccer Academy (YFSSA) is set to make an exciting leap this weekend as its Under-13 team heads to Botswana for a two-day exchange tournament that director Collin Nyambiya believes marks a major step forward in developing young football talent.
The squad departed Bulawayo yesterday afternoon and will take to the pitch this morning at Francistown Stadium. Nyambiya described the invitation as a milestone that strengthens regional football ties and offers invaluable exposure for the academy’s emerging stars.
“We have been invited for an exchange programme. The guys there were also former footballers in Botswana who are running their projects. We are like sister clubs now,” he said.
Nyambiya noted that such international trips mirror similar initiatives across the region, citing Willard Katsande’s South African academy, which recently toured Zimbabwe.
“The trips are a step in the right direction as they give exposure to our youngsters. They learn a lot competing with players from other countries. It builds their confidence and makes them believe they can play football at the highest level,” he added, stressing that the tour will also play a vital role in team building and boosting self-belief.
The tournament kicks off at 8am with YFSSA (Zimbabwe) facing Joe’s Heritage (Botswana) in the Under-13 opener. At 9:15am, Joe’s Heritage will meet Dinaletsana in an Under-15 clash before YFSA return to action at 10:30am for their second Under-13 match against Dinaletsana.
In a message to parents, YFSSA confirmed that regular training will continue on Friday and Saturday for all other age groups, including Under-13 players not travelling. Efforts are underway to arrange friendly matches for those remaining behind. The academy wished its travelling squad “all the best” as they prepare to represent Zimbabwe on the regional stage.
