When musicians Soul Jah Love and Bounty Lisa were named among top dancehall artistes at a contest at City Sports Centre in December last year, few people knew they are husband and wife.
Soul Jah Love was named on third position in the male musicians’ category while Bounty Lisa was voted the best female dancehall artiste at the competition graced by Jamaican musician, Turbulence.

As information filtered through that the two are married, it became apparent that another unique couple had entered the music fraternity.

Talented music couples are rare on the local music scene, especially in the secular realm. Without doubt, gospel musicians Pastor Charles and Olivia Charamba make the best music couple in the land.

Other couples that registered their presence in gospel music include Jonathan and Shuvai Wutawunashe, Ephraim and Respina Patai (popularly known as Baba naMai Patai) and the recent combination of Tinevimbo and Rumbidzai Gatawa.

On the secular scene the late Andy Brown and Chiwoniso Maraire made a talented couple before they separated while Tendai Manatsa and Selmor Mtukudzi have also been notable husband and wife musicians. Rockford “Roki” Josphats and Pauline Gundidza’s marriage had its challenges but the young musicians shared a passion for art.

So, Soul Jah Love and Bounty Lisa’s powerful arrival on the music scene promised to be the beginning of an interesting chapter in the eventful history of music couples.

Their grand entrance into the hectic music land through the dancehall avenue was also of interest.

This is a new genre bringing a different colour to the music rainbow and causing waves in an industry that is hardly tolerant to emerging genres.

The young man and his wife could easily have taken advantage of the attention usually given to music couples and the emphatic rise of dancehall music to make serious impact even beyond their genre.

Here was an opportunity presenting itself to a young couple from Mbare at the historic period of the rise of dancehall music. But, it is disheartening how opportunities are sometimes availed to enemies of chances.

There are people that hate chances and would be sure to blow away every opportunity that comes their way.

Honestly, how could Soul Jah Love fail to see that heavens had really opened up for him and his wife?

Since he hogged the limelight last year, Soul Jah Love has made serious tarnish his name through double-booking shows. He has gone around collecting money from promoters for shows he never fulfils.

At one point he took a group of about 20 people to a show claiming they were his band members. He then protested by abandoning the show when his ‘band members’ were not allowed into the show.

He shamelessly defends his bloated “band”. Oh God! There are genres that require big bands but we have rarely had such big bands in the land.

Is Soul Jah Love now leading Zimpraise choir? Twenty band members for a dancehall musician? Please be serious Soul Jah Love.

Last week the young musician lost a chance to perform at President Robert Mugabe’s birthday bash at Gwanzura Stadium because he ignored the show organiser’s simple instruction for him to confirm participation.

Surprisingly, he came to the gala and went on his knees begging for a slot to perform. That level of confusion is alarming.

Soul Jah Love, you should be planning a serious family with your wife but these actions will haunt you.

Now they want to get you arrested in Gweru because you took their money and went into hiding when you were supposed to perform at their show. You have lost the plot young man.
