ZIMBABWE’S Under 19 side has stepped into World Cup mode with a sense of purpose, and head coach Elton Chigumbura is convinced the team’s biggest advantage might come from the ground beneath their feet. Hosting the 2026 ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup has given the young Chevrons a platform they have never had before and the former national captain believes that familiarity and atmosphere can tilt the balance in their favour.
Zimbabwe will co-host the tournament with Namibia and all three of their group games will be played at Takashinga Sports Club in Harare.
Chigumbura said the players know the surfaces well and should draw confidence from a home crowd that is expected to fill the venue.
“Playing at home is an advantage; we understand the conditions and we will have great support behind us.
“We are helping the players stay calm, play their natural game and trust the work they have put in.
“Mentally preparing them to manage expectations is key so we represent our country well,” said Chigumbura.
His squad has been mixing it with provincial outfits as part of their build-up up and the coach feels the competitive workload has sharpened their belief. He said the group understands what is required at this level and has the temperament to match their ambition.
“We are going in with a winning mindset. This group can compete with and beat the best teams.
“Success will come from executing our processes, staying disciplined and sticking to our roles.
“If we do that consistently, we give ourselves a real chance to go all the way,” he said.
The World Cup will feature 16 teams and 41 matches, starting with the group phase, then moving into the Super Six, semi-finals and the final in Harare.
Zimbabwe will host the tournament across Harare Sports Club, Takashinga Cricket Club and Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.
Zimbabwe sits in Group C with England, Pakistan and Scotland. All matches in the pool will be played at Takashinga.
Their campaign begins against Scotland on January 15, continues with England on the 18th and closes against Pakistan on January 22.
Before the tournament starts, the hosts will take on the United States of America in a warm-up match at Old Hararians Sports Club on January 10, followed by New Zealand at Masvingo Sports Club on January 12.
