Junior golf players who participated in the Midlands Junior Golf Open held in Gweru over the weekend gave a very good account of themselves, which convinced many that the future of the sport in the province is bright.The event, which also featured junior players from the Matabeleland region, was aimed at scouting for talent.The Midlands Golf Club team is aiming to develop future pros who can compete at the highest level.
Never Mwenye, a coach, said he was happy with the event which was seeking to assist junior golfers to enter into the mainstream and take sport to the next level.”It is always good to leave a legacy. Unlike during our times, these kids are lucky that some of their parents are sponsoring them and helping us to make this event possible,” he said.
“I want to see more pros coming from this junior development initiative.”Gweru Golf Club chairperson, Mr Martin Mudyiwa called for national policies that support the development of junior players.
“I want to believe we are going to see changes in policy to support our juniors at national level,” he said”Let us give them the chance to shine in this sport because they are the future of the country. We have got 36 juniors from many schools. We are happy to provide them with free training.
“As a club we are putting measures to manage how they train. We are trying to support junior development.”
Zimbabwe Junior Boys participated at Toyota Junior Golf World Cup in Japan in June after finishing second in the Junior All Africa Golf Championships in South Africa in April.
