“Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them,” goes the famous William Shakespeare line. The first part of this assertion mirrors talented 13-year-old mbira player and singer, Tendai Mavengeni who dazzled music lovers as she launched her debut six track album “Destiny” at Book Café recently. She exhibited she was born with immense musical talent.
The soft spoken teen, showed her prowess in music and the instrument that she thumbed with precision.
Those who witnessed the historic event people of different ages, race and creed can attest to the fact that Tendai is the future.
As she went on stage Tendai could not wait to do what she knows best and with her golden voice, the teen drew everyone’s attention.
Clad in a black, designer dress with golden trimming and a rose on front, Tendai gave viewers value for their time.
She went on stage holding her instrument (mbira) opening her electrifying act with an introduction to the track “Africa” which everyone fell in love with.
As she mesmerized alone, her band members slowly emerged heading to their instruments and within a flush of a second, the venue roared to life with live music.
She did four tracks on the album including “Tinunurei”, “Freedom” and “Wakaronga”.
The teenager would introduce her track and say a few lines to it, asking the audience to join in music and dance.
The major highlight of the show was when master of ceremonies, bassist Edith WeUtonga joined her on stage with Prince Musarurwa doing some routine dances.
It was also complemented with the launch of the video to the track “Tinunureyi”.
Guest of honour, music critic Joyce Jenje-Makwenda said music goes beyond the stage.
“To my daughter Tendai and others, you should know that music goes a long way. Do not end on the stage but explore other venues like schools and music college colleges,” she said.
Njenje-Makwenda also thanked the Mavengeni family for their undying love and support towards their daughter.
She urged her to be focused since music industry calls for self control.
“You have started music at a tender age, now you need to be focused. Do not let the hype define your character since those who failed to be on the lookout are now grounded,” added Makwenda.
Mbuya Stella Chiweshe who was part of the guests was thrilled by the young talent and offered her some advice while seasoned artistes also convened at the fully-packed entertainment venue to support the energetic young star.
