KoDakamela in Nkayi, Matabeleland North, will be the place to be this weekend as Chief Mbusi Bekithemba Dakamela hosts the third edition of Imiklomelo kaDakamela, an awards showcase dedicated to honouring outstanding individuals during their lifetime.
This two-day event, running from Friday to Saturday, promises an artistic and cultural extravaganza, with entertainment taking centre stage. Among the fresh talents set to debut at the awards is teenage spoken word artist, Amen Sibanda, a learner at Tohwe Secondary School in Nkayi District.
Sibanda, known for his hard-hitting poetry against drug abuse, expressed his excitement about performing at Imiklomelo kaDakamela.
“This is a special moment for me, as I get to attend the awards for the first time. These are the kind of spaces where one gets to mix and mingle with seasoned creatives. The goal is to get known, and what better way than being where the people are?” he said.
At the event, he will recite a poem titled Ngipheni Libe Linye, a piece in which he pleads for more opportunities to perform. He will share the stage with fellow Tohwe Secondary School learner, Bethel Ncube.
Originally from Insiza District in Matabeleland South, Sibanda has previously performed at local schools and public gatherings, steadily building a name for himself.
The awards ceremony will also feature performances from renowned artistes, including hip-hop star Awa Khiwe, Evias Bhebhe of Dziba Lemvula fame, Dr Gasolo, Khaya Arts and Sikhosana Buhlungu.
Speaking from his base in Nkayi, Chief Dakamela confirmed that preparations for the event are at an advanced stage, with many notable guests confirming their attendance.
“Everything is going according to plan. Roads have been graded to allow smooth travel for motorists, and we’re setting up camps to accommodate our visitors. I encourage attendees to bring tents for their stay in Nkayi. Many royal families and socialites have confirmed their attendance, so this year’s celebrations promise to be full of fun,” he said.
Since its launch in 2022, Imiklomelo kaDakamela has become an annual platform for celebrating excellence and community development. It recognises individuals, philanthropists, volunteers and businesses that go the extra mile for societal growth. Past recipients of the awards include poet Albert Nyathi, the late historian and cultural icon Pathisa Nyathi and Professor Solwayo Ngwenya.
The event is expected to attract a large crowd, blending cultural appreciation with artistic expression in what promises to be an unforgettable weekend in Nkayi. — @MbuleloMpofu
