After an unconvincing first leg in Harare where the Young Warriors were held to a 2-2 draw at Gwanzura, very few gave them the chance of beating Mozambique away from home.
Coupled with complicated travelling arrangements where they endured more than 1 500km from Harare to Maputo by road, the Young Warriors came out of their shell and put up a polished second-half performance to silence their critics.
The Young Warriors took control of the proceedings in the early stages of the game but failed to transform their dominance into goals.
With the home side employing some delaying tactics, the Young Warriors got frustrated and lost control enabling Mozambique to dictate the game.
And they were nearly punished before half time after Mazambican winger Shelton Deira roasted two defenders on the left side but his cross was wasted by Muhumane.
Coach Lloyd Chigove intoduced pacy forward Brett Amidu after the break and the Aces Youth Soccer Academy forward breathed life into the team’s attack threatening with some fine raids and excellent footwork.
After the goal Zimbabwe started displaying some superior technical awareness with Bingala marshalling the midfield well controlling and distributing the ball with precision.
Bingala, a Form Three student at Mount Pleasant feels the team is beginning to gel and they are destined for greatness if they are kept together.
“It was a difficult game but we managed to get the result which is important at the end of the day,” said Bingala.
“We put up a better performance compared to the one in the first leg. We are beginning to understand each other well and if we keep on playing together I see a bright future.
“In the first leg we failed to click because it was our first coMpetitive international match together but after the friendly match against Zambia we learnt a lot of things and results are coming,” added Bingala.
Having travelled for the first time to play outside the country, Bingala believes most players will be driven to do well so that they can travel more and get to see different countries.
“It was my first time playing outside the country and now that we will be travelling to Congo Brazzaville it will motivate a lot of guys to do better so that we can travel around different countries.
“We heard Congo Brazzaville is a good side but we need to stay focused and play our normal game.
“There is a lot of talent in our team and we can go all the way and qualify for this tournament,” Bingala said.
The 10th edition of the African Youth Championships is set for Morocco next year and Zimbabwe has already participated at the tournament on three occasions.
Zimbabwe have not fared well in youth competitions mainly due to lack of financial resources and failure by previous administrations to focus on youth development.
